W hen I first moved to Leeds I missed home dearly. It wasn’t so much my Mum doing my washing and ironing. I could cope without seeing my old friends every day, and I wasn’t bothered in the slightest about missing my little village. Not my village, no. But what was in it, and the few golden miles around it I missed enormously. The thing is, my home village is a very proud fish and chip area – we’re blessed with several award winning fisheries which go on getting better every year as their competitiveness intensifies. For someone who has already marked fish and chips down as their death row meal, saying goodbye to that was a big deal.

So I set out across Leeds trying to recapture a little piece of home, and came home disappointed. Then I set out again, and again and again. Each time more disappointed than the last. It wasn’t until my 3rd year that I took a fateful wrong turn and ended up staring at the huge green frame of Billy Murgs. I wasn’t particularly hungry but as any fish and chip fan will tell you – a queue outside a chippy is too good to turn down, hungry or not.
Let me tell you, that old piece of advice will serve you well. I wouldn’t go so far as to say you can live by it, but it’s not far off. As it was my first trip, I ordered big and went for ‘The Big ‘Un’ with chips, as I always like to see just how big a chippy can do a special – and how well they do it. Murgatroyds did it well. I was about 11 stone before I stopped the car that day and I was close to 12 by the time I got back in.
The quality of the product at Murgatroyds is top notch. It’s a great batter – crispy and light, with a good colour. Unlike many fisheries, the batter has it’s own delightfully savoury flavour rather than just adding a bland coating to the fish. The fish is thick and well cooked – and although I shouldn’t have to praise it for being a full fillet rather than minced and reformed – unfortunately due to some of the places I’ve tried – I do. It also comes in 3 sizes (excluding kids), standard, special and ‘The Big’Un’ (which, by the way, really is) which I like – and although I haven’t gone for anything bigger than standard for a few years, I fondly remember the days I had one a week! In short, Murgatroyds is so good, I moved to Rawdon just so I could easily find it. I don’t miss my village anymore. When anyone asks, I’m from right near Billy Murgs.

  • Top quality fish and chips, as good as any in Leeds
  • Sizes for every appetite
  • Nice restaurant and ample outdoor seating

  • Available soft drinks are poor (although vending machines are outside)
  • Open every day, what are they trying to do to me!
  • You get fat if you eat a Big ‘Un every week!

Hey there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could find a captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!
