I had been waiting for what seemed like forever to try Pickles and Potter, and was starting to think it might never happen. The amount of times I’d been past the place with the intention of checking it out must have racked into double figures by the time the suspicious looks from the staff finally convinced me it was time to walk inside. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to go in – my repeated attempts are testament to that – but in this case Pickles and Potter is a victim of its own wonderful popularity.

Although it wouldn’t usually have bothered me, I needed to take some pictures for you happy readers and with the relentless rain we’ve been having, outdoors just wouldn’t cut it and the popularity of the place meant that indoors was repeatedly out of the question. So I waited. Waited like a stalker in fact, fully prepared to dive into anyone’s seat the minute they showed any sign of having to return to work.

This waiting is how I discovered one of the real appealing features of Pickles and Potter – no one wants to leave. I hadn’t even tasted the food yet but the atmosphere of the place and its laid back ethos had already scored considerable points – more than enough to make up for the deductions due to lack of seats…

When my turn came, it was a late lunch – round about 2.30pm and I was fully prepped to take my time.

I ordered the pulled pork sandwich on a white roll and Mrs locallunch had the ham favourite. Both came with a funny little carrot garnish on the side which probably has a name but I won’t pretend I know it. I was just pleased to see that it wasn’t coleslaw! My sandwich, although delicious in flavour and quality, was very bread heavy and this did spoil it a bit for me. I’m not complaining – I got to choose the roll myself – but it’s worth noting.
Maybe charge more for the bigger rolls and put more filling in? I don’t know. I don’t run the place and nor would I be able to. I’m just saying. Aside from that, it was a truly enjoyable sandwich, and given the time of day I made the most of my ability to soak up the atmosphere under the rather unusual pictures of the proprietors (you’ll see what I mean!). It was a very English afternoon, and for that I applaud the place. One of my great pleasures in life and one that is often forgotten or overlooked as simply a break for sustenance these days was, albeit for an hour or so, reinstated with real aplomb.

A very simple sandwich, done exquisitely well with all the trimmings you’d wish for – cups of tea, crisps and so on. More than just a late lunch. What we’re talking about here is an English tradition and a little bit of heritage. Despite the rain, despite the riots, despite the fact that we’ll probably be way down the medal table at our own Olympics; for one afternoon I was proud to English.

What do you think? Pickles and Potter

Pickles and Potter is, without a doubt, a consummate modern lunch spot. Yes, it is near the top of the price range for a locallunch venue and yes it is regularly busy. But, thankfully, these are merely a representation of the quality and the enjoyment you can expect rather than a detraction from it.

  • Great quality ingredients and plenty of options besides sandwiches
  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere
  • Top-end pricing
  • You might have to grab a takeout
  • You might get peckish later if you have a big appetite
