As you might be able to tell from the picture of The Sandwich Shop that I took out of the window of Pooky and Grumps, it was snowing outside. Which means that even with the Summer we’ve been having it’s clear that this review is long overdue. I had intended to stick it up sooner but I’m sure you’ll find a nice sandwich, salad and crisps far more suited to the current flurry of delightful weather than a freak snowstorm – so here it is.

Whether it’s clear or not from the pictures, it should be made perfectly clear in words – Pooky and Grumps was a wonderful haven from the bitterly cold day

Whether it’s clear or not from the pictures, it should be made perfectly clear in words – Pooky and Grumps was a wonderful haven from the bitterly cold day. Their boast of ‘the best coffee in Horsforth’ – surely a dig at neighbours Costa – would ordinarily have been enough to tempt me inside given the weather, but I was more than happy to peruse their fine selection of independent food and drink as I rubbed my hands back to health.
Those shelves stacked full of goodies – like a bookcase full of delicious ideas. I spent more time reading the labels here than the spines of books in my University library. Each one a new and fascinating introduction into something else I’ve always wanted to learn. Far-flung ales, extraordinary cheeses, exquisite meats. They’re all here – every volume of taste. The best thing? You can eat most of it in the cafe.
I opted for the salami panini – and was almost unnaturally excited to be able to select my own salami, and my own bread. Although a small pleasure, it’s choices like this that really set a cafe apart and set it on its way to 5 stars – and legendary neighbourhood status. Once I knew chilli salami was on its way, I was already pleased with my Pooky and Grumps experience. Not unlike Pickles and Potter in it’s pricing, Pooky and Grumps is quite expensive – so if you’re after a quick and simple bit of sustenance on your way past and baulk at paying any more for a sandwich than you would for a pre-pack it might not be the place for you.

My sandwich was very, very tasty. I’d happily have eaten another, and as many more as they had back there. For me, it tasted precisely as a good deli sandwich should – exactly like you want and expect it to, only different. It hits the mark in terms of all the good things I want out of a salami panini; the bread is crispy and still light and doughy, the cheese gives the rest of the fillings a warm hug and the salami has enough teeth to bite through all of it. Despite this, it still does enough to surprise me – the delicious tangy kiss coming from the chilli in the salami catches me out time and time again like an old friend tapping me on the shoulder. Welcome, but not what I was expecting. That, my lovely readers, is the beauty of good ingredients and precisely why I whole-heartedly recommend Pooky and Grumps.

What do you think? Pooky and Grump's

The ingredients, the selection of delicious things to buy, the excitement on your fellow customer’s happy faces – all these are reasons to try Pooky and Grumps. If you enjoy a locallunch style bite to eat, which I can only assume you do, you’ll already know what to expect and won’t be surprised by the prices or the fact that it won’t ever be as slick an operation as Costa across the road. You’ll also appreciate that there’s a world of difference between buying lunch and buying a car – slick is not necessarily the order of the day and a multi-national giant will not make you as nice a plate of food as these guys.

  • Fabulous ingredients and local producers
  • A library of take home products
  • Great choice and wide variety of options
  • Prices are higher-end
  • You may have to wait for take-out at busy times
  • Smaller suppliers means they may run out of some items

When it does hit enter. You should now have the code in the remote. Try it. If it dont work yous pushin power too fast do it again slower.
